Case Study: Designing for Impact – YWCA Hamilton’s 2023-24 Impact Report (Full Report)
Overview
As the designer of the 2023-24 YWCA Hamilton Impact Report, I was tasked with creating a document that balanced compelling visuals with a results-driven focus. The report highlighted the organization’s achievements across its three pillars—housing, skills development, and health equity—and was designed to appeal to donors while meeting accessibility (AODA) standards.
This year’s report also included an innovative feature: a dynamic QR code, introduced in the blurb about Shelley Niro’s artwork. This integration added a layer of interactivity, bridging the gap between print and digital engagement.
Streamlining Information for Impact
With a tighter format, the challenge was to convey comprehensive data and stories in a way that was visually engaging yet easy to digest.
- Prioritizing Results: Bold headlines and clear typography highlighted key metrics, such as the 27% increase in shelter visits and the 88% success rate in housing transitions.
- Infographics and Callouts: Data was transformed into simple, eye-catching graphics, ensuring readers quickly understood the scale and success of YWCA’s initiatives.
- Original Photography: Many of my photos of events, participants, and programs added authenticity and vibrancy, bringing the stories to life and grounding the report in the lived experiences of the community.
Accessibility and Usability
The report adhered to AODA guidelines, ensuring inclusivity for all readers:
- Readable Design: High-contrast colors, large fonts, and logical layout ensured content was accessible to individuals with visual impairments or cognitive challenges.
- Concise Layouts: The flow of information was streamlined to avoid overwhelming readers, focusing on clarity and engagement.
- Described Images: The use of descriptive tags in the digital version, enabling those with screen readers to access information.
Highlighting Shelley Niro’s Contribution
The inclusion of Shelley Niro’s artwork, Wishing a River, offered a meaningful cultural touchpoint. The single dynamic QR code embedded in this section provided readers with an opportunity to explore more about the artist and the piece, connecting YWCA’s mission with broader themes of Indigenous art and resilience.
Design Impact
The final report served as both a celebration of YWCA Hamilton’s work and a strategic tool for future fundraising and engagement:
- Visual Storytelling: A seamless blend of data and visuals made the report engaging and persuasive.
- Authenticity: Photography and design elements grounded the impact report in the real experiences of those served by YWCA Hamilton.
- Functionality: The QR code test added an interactive element that could pave the way for greater integration in future reports.
Outcomes
The report was well-received by donors, stakeholders, and community members, who appreciated its balance of aesthetics, accessibility, and focus on measurable results.
