YWCA Hamilton Impact Reports 2021–2024
Three reports. One evolving story of impact.
Editorial design, original photography, information design and accessible production across three annual YWCA Hamilton impact reports, spanning the #WomenBuildHamilton campaign, organizational change and a results-focused three-pillar report.
THE PROJECT
Created while on staff at YWCA Hamilton, these three annual impact reports documented a period of significant growth and change for the organization. Across the 2021–22, 2022–23 and 2023–24 reporting years, the work evolved from supporting the $5 million #WomenBuildHamilton campaign, through a new strategic plan and organizational transition, to a concise results-focused publication organized around housing, skills development and health equity. Each report brought together program stories, data, photography, donor and stakeholder information and organizational priorities in a clear, human editorial format.
THE CHALLENGE
Translate a large volume of complex organizational information into publications that donors, funders, partners and community stakeholders could navigate quickly and understand. Each year introduced different priorities and constraints: campaign fundraising and donor recognition in 2021–22; a refreshed brand, new strategic plan, staffing changes and sensitive subject matter in 2022–23; and a need for greater concision, measurable results, accessibility and print-to-digital integration in 2023–24.
THE APPROACH
Build a consistent editorial foundation using strong hierarchy, typography, pacing, photography and information design, then allow the system to adapt to the story each year needed to tell. Original and curated photography kept the reports grounded in real people, programs and spaces, while statistics, program information and calls to action were structured so readers could move easily between narrative and measurable outcomes. Accessibility, dignity and clarity informed both visual and production decisions.
WHAT WE MADE
The 2021–22 report supported the #WomenBuildHamilton campaign and the completion of the Putman Family YWCA, balancing program impact, donor recognition and campaign storytelling. The 2022–23 report translated a new strategic plan and refreshed identity into a cohesive publication while addressing homelessness, substance use, gender-based violence and reproductive care through an extended review process. The 2023–24 report streamlined the system around three organizational pillars, gave key results prominent visual treatment, incorporated original photography and information graphics, strengthened digital accessibility, and used a dynamic QR code within the section featuring Shelley Niro’s Wishing a River to connect print with additional digital content.
THE RESULT
A three-year body of editorial work that gave YWCA Hamilton a clearer and more consistent way to communicate organizational impact while allowing each report to reflect its particular moment. The publications combined data, photography and mission-focused storytelling for print and digital distribution and remained useful across fundraising, stakeholder, community and organizational communications.
