ReignJah
Portraits with purpose behind them.
Artist photography for Scarborough musician ReignJah, created for DeShaun Jones and Hamilton-based MangoTree Music Corporation to support artist development, promotion and the release of a deeply personal body of music.
THE PROJECT
ReignJah is a Scarborough artist whose music was driven by a deeply personal goal: using his album to raise money to help put a roof over his mother’s head. The portrait session was created for DeShaun Jones of MangoTree Music Corporation in Hamilton as part of the promotional and artist-development work surrounding ReignJah. His passion for the music was inseparable from the compassion and purpose behind it, and the photographs needed to carry some of that emotional weight.
THE CHALLENGE
Create promotional portraits that could support ReignJah as an emerging artist while reflecting more than a conventional music-industry image. The photographs needed to communicate intensity, sincerity and personality, giving MangoTree Music Corporation strong visual material for promotion while respecting the personal motivation behind the album.
THE APPROACH
Approach the session as an artist portrait rather than a generic promotional shoot. Focus on presence, expression and emotional tone, giving ReignJah room to bring his own personality to the photographs. The visual direction supported MangoTree Music Corporation’s artist-development and promotional work while keeping the person and the story behind the music at the centre.
WHAT WE MADE
I photographed ReignJah for DeShaun Jones and MangoTree Music Corporation, creating a focused set of artist portraits for use in promotion, publicity and artist development. The images were selected and edited to give the campaign flexible visual material while presenting ReignJah as a passionate, serious artist whose work was rooted in a very personal purpose.
THE RESULT
The session produced a promotional image library that supported MangoTree Music Corporation’s work introducing and developing ReignJah as an artist. More importantly, the portraits helped put a human face to music created with a deeply personal motivation, reflecting both the passion of the performer and the compassion behind the project.
